. . . . .

The sun seemed too low in the sky on Al’s walk home, like it was a late autumn day instead of the middle of June. He could have stayed for lunch, but he didn’t think his stomach or nerves would have allowed him. He knew things died so he could eat, but he hoped they didn’t die like that. He ambled past the rock that acted as the inanimate doorman to the mine and continued on his way home, absorbing what he had just witnessed.

When he was far enough from the mouth of the mine, and the eyes of the rock doorman, he chucked the rabbit’s foot into the grass. Good luck or not, he did not want it. He stuffed the fold-up blade it in his pocket without closer inspection and moseyed home.

He thought about the rabbit. He didn’t kill the thing, but he had been there, and he had seen it. Maybe he would have felt better if he had eaten it, but for now he felt crummy. Killing and eating would take some getting used to if he wanted to live in the hills like Cyrus. He could learn from Cyrus, but he didn’t have to be like Cyrus. Yeah, he didn’t have to be like Cyrus. The thought provided little comfort as he crossed the fence and made his way down the hill towards home.
